Went for my birthday the last weekend in October. Lemon drop martinis were DANGEROUSLY delicious. Could've drank way more than I did. Staff was friendly and dressed in costume to add some fun to the atmosphere. I got the Spooky Roll (specialty of the week I think) and it was AMAZING. The other rolls we had were delicious as well. Will for sure be back.

the best place to go in Des Moines if looking for best sushi. Food is always great, Service is always great. Always a wonderful time at Akebono!!!!! We will be back very soon. ps. tell Tim we will be there next Wednesday at 6:00 for my wifes bday, 12 of us, including Kurt and Tiffany

Nam and Tim are hands down the best Japanese restaurant owners in the area. They used to own Taki back in the day and provide the best experience possible for their patrons. I'll add to this review today. It says a lot when people who worked for the owners YEARS ago come back to work for them again. This is the BEST sushi in Des Moines. They do NOT sacrifice on quality of ingredients. I was here tonight and a man who was actually from Japan was in and raved about their uni (sea urchin) and ordered seconds. Don't even second guess coming here. Hands down the only place I will take anyone wanting sushi.

I ordered the Sumo Ramen, which was dry, tasteless pulled pork in a "broth" of water and soy sauce. It wasn't ramen and it wasn't particularly good, either.

Hands down the BEST sushi place in the metro. Great pricing fantastic service. every. single. time. The staff treat you like friends they are knowledgeable. I cannot rave about this place enough I tell all of my friends this is the place to go!

What a special gem! Clean and modern hip atmosphere. Great music and amazing food. We got the crab puffs, maki rolls, miso soup, and ginger salad! 12/10 on every single one! Light and fresh and large maki rolls make it worth the slightly higher price. The crab puffs are similar to crab Rangoon but with much less fried breading—highly recommend. Also amazing attentive service—quick to seat us, take our orders, and bring out our food! Thank you for the amazing experience!

Akebona is our favorite place for sushi in Des Moines. Great food, friendly staff and they want to make sure you love everything you get. If not they'll make it right. Give it a try.

Akebono has a cool vibe, and very reasonably priced sushi. I had a seaweed salad, rainbow roll and 6 pieces of sushi, and my total came to $36. It wasn't the greatest sushi I have ever had, but it was good and well-made. The server was attentive, but I took a star off for service because when the seaweed salad came, they had added two shrimp. It was a very nice touch, and I love shrimp, but unfortunately am highly allergic to it. When I told him that, he sniped at me, saying I should have told him that when I ordered. I have eaten at many restaurants in my life, and just know not to order anything with shrimp. If I'm not sure of the ingredients, I ask. It was unnecessary of him to chastise me like that, and it diminished the experience for me.

Phenomenal service every time I go. I hate tofu but I am a fan of there's. They have beautiful pottery that they put soy sauce in. They have gluten free options on many things on their menu.

Service is quick and the food is delicious! The hi-ya ramen is my absolute favorite. The prime rib is very tender and flavorful, and the fried tofu is amazing with the broth. Very close, if not authentic to the ramen I've had in Japan.

unique options and the server was helpful in picking out items he thought we would like, if not a little overbearing. tried sashimi for the first time and it was good but I still prefer regular rolls, really solid sushi and a good find in des moines.
