Raman, I note that your mother posted a one star review of our firm in which she was critical of our firm for amount of time that the Refugee Board took to hear her (ultimately succesful) refugee claim a month ago. I'm copying our reply to her below: Although I appreciate the effort that you took to share your experience about our law practice, I don't think that your account of your experience with our firm reflects the reality of your case. I should note that none of the lawyers at our firm ever describe an immigration procedure as having a “maximum” time. This is because there are many factors over which we have no control that may have impact the amount of time that the processing of an application or refugee claim will require. For this reason, no one at our law practice would have promised you that it would take one to one and a half years “maximum” for you to bring your dependent child to Canada as a permanent resident, especially since at that time you had not even initiated your claim for refugee protection. Two distinct processes needed to be finalized before your son could travel to Canada: a refugee claim, and an application for permanent resident status. Each of these processes typically takes longer than one year and in some cases may take many years to complete. In addition, the COVID-19 global pandemic had a significant impact on the processing of all immigration applications and refugee claims. In your case, based on the strength of the narrative and documentary evidence we provided, your claim for refugee protection was granted without a hearing, considerably expediting the process. There were no deadlines missed and no forms unfiled in connection with your claim for protection, which likely explains why it was granted on an expedited basis as a manifestly well-founded claim. Obviously, we were very pleased with the results. I regret that you felt that we had not kept a promise to you regarding the speed with which immigration would process your and your son’s cases. I can appreciate why you chose not to retain us to assist you in bringing your son to Canada. In the end, I am very happy that you and your son were reunited in Canada. I also regret the stress and anxiety that you experienced while the government of Canada was processing your application for refugee protection and later permanent resident status. Your son appears to have arrived in Canada approximately two and a half years after you first consulted us. Although I appreciate that any delay in your reunification in Canada was too long, this represents a relatively quick processing for these two applications, especially given that they were processed during the COVID-19 global pandemic. I wish you and your family all the best as you pursue your new lives in Canada.
