One of my favorite places to shop for My hobby , the greatest hobby in the world O scale model Train's.

I don't live in Minnesota and it's been a year since I'd been there so I first went back and read my review from 2021. This time, I got there on a Sunday - literally just after they'd opened the door. The man at the front actually cut the lights on for me. I'm sorry that the 'aroma' puts some folks off but as I said in my last review, for those of us old enough to remember the hobby shops of the 60's, the smell is quite familiar. This trip, I went straight to the 'used' room in the back. Though I still just consider myself an 'advanced beginner' model railroader, I actually enjoy 'working the junkyard' plus I had a better idea this time of what the average cost of an item; and more time to browse. The Used section is a good place to find 'practice' cars - ones you can cheaply learn repairs, customizations and weathering with. If you're willing to dig, you can find some good deals; for example, I got Atlas manual switch machines/like new for .99 each. Most of their used locomotives are in locked glass cases and you do have to get an employee to unlock them. I can see where this would annoy both the customers and the employees. They also have a lot of HO scale buildings; both build/used and New-Old-Stock. Another thing they have in the Used section is slot car track; and lots of it. In the main (new items) section, they have a reasonably good selection of all scales. They have a significant amount of N scale and I was surprised to see that they had a really large amount of Z scale. I can understand that some customers are put off that they pretty much let you fend for yourself; but personally I prefer this to a grumpy old guy following me around and telling me 'what's wrong with this country' and 'these kids today'. If you're into trains or model kits, I highly recommend that you give this place a chance.

I been here a couple times and havent had any bad experiences myself, but I can definitely see why people would leave negative reviews. I personally think its a really great place and usually spend about an hour a half looking at everything. Some of the prices can run high but ive also gotten some really nice cars for lower than I usually see them at. Will continue to make the trip to SMS but only really for scenery as a couple other train stores have far more selection of the uncommon railroads I like.

Scale Model Supplies is the best hobby shop I've used ever, anywhere. Great variety of rolling stock in all scales, locomotives, tools, books, scenery materials, and repair services. For those who model other than trains, as I do, a fantastic offering of ship, plane, automotive and other models. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. I've been going to them for over 25 years. When, for 12 of those years, I lived over a thousand miles away, a visit to the Twin Cities always included a pilgrimage to--and purchases at--Scale Model Supplies.

#1 best train store. 3 of my best running engines came from there, largest selection of rolling stock and thousands of engines. They are reasonably priced with used n scale locos being around $50v. Rolling stock can range from $4-$15. They have everything for every scale. G, O, S, Ho, on30, N, and even Z scale.

I came here a few weeks ago to pick up some paint. I was pleased with the selection. Agree with other posts that it’s a bit musty, but it adds to the character of the place.

I really wanted to support and like this place. Yes it's in a basement and has an old smell, but that's not what turned me off. As others have stated here, the customer service is lacking. I get what other reviewers mean when they say rude or unfriendly. The store itself is interesting but I hope they switch staff. It's not in the safest area too, to be honest. The African American guy working the checkout tried to do a bait and switch on the price. It was a broken clearance item that apparently he thought was undervalued. Just be careful not to get ripped off when you check out and ask questions if the prices don't add up. I did and ended up walking away from a bad transaction. I really wish I could report a positive experience but I have to be honest.

This place is great always can find what I'm looking for.
