I have been thinking seriously about taking American Cruise Lines' Columbia and Snake Rivers tour for a number of months. I had been hesitating due to cost and questions regarding air transportation. Today, I decided to do some research on various web sites to get a feel for what actual customers' experiences had been. So glad that I did! Never saw so many totally negative customer reviews for a company. I'm used to seeing some grumpy reviews sprinkled amid okay-to-great comments for resorts, airlines, etc. but the number of people warning others off ACL, and many with similar complaints, is staggering. Time to rethink my vacation plans. Thank you, Yelp and reviewers, for saving me from what sounds like might have been a very costly mistake.

Horrific experience on American Cruise Lines:

My mother and I were passengers on hugely problematic voyage of American Cruise Lines' American Splendor from 10/9-10/16. For my mother, who is 91 years old, this trip was intended to be her last "travel hurrah," and I was happy to accompany her to make this wish come true. My mother and I believe that we, and other passengers on this trip, were victims of false advertising and operational mismanagement. We have conferred with other passengers and also with staff members and there was widespread agreement that the trip was substandard and mismanaged.

In fact, we were so unhappy that we chose to leave the cruise at the first opportunity to disembark, which came after a full four days stuck on the river. Rather than endure more unsatisfactory experiences at the hands of American Cruise Lines (ACL), we traveled on our own to Nashville for the remainder of the week where we incurred several thousand dollars of additional travel expenses. We were subsequently told by many passengers that "we made the right call" as the cruise continued to experience problems of poor planning and mismanagement for the duration of the itinerary which further disappointed your passengers.

Below is the "promise" of the trip as advertised on the ACL website. My notes, detailing the reality of what was delivered, are interspersed.

ACL version - "Embark on a remarkable journey from Memphis to Nashville, where the mighty currents of the Mississippi River, the commanding Ohio River, and the tranquil waters of the Cumberland River guide you through breathtaking landscapes."

Our version - The currents were far from mighty. In fact, water levels were so low that the speed of the boat was slowed and river traffic was an obstacle to timely passage. Further, the landscapes were unsightly. The river was a brown color, and the cement and rocks of the canal were visible.

ACL version - "Witness the dramatic interplay of rolling hills and towering cliffs and observe majestic bald eagles and stately blue herons in their natural habitat."

Our version - The landscape was flat and one of endless non-descript trees interspersed with highways and other signs of civilization. We saw no bald eagles nor blue herons.

ACL version - "Explore historical landmarks that narrate tales of yore, all set against the backdrop of sunsets that bathe the waters in ethereal hues. Venture through an array of cities and small towns that resonate with the echoes of iconic music legends."

Our version - We spent four full days of the cruise trapped on the boat. Hardly an "array" of cities and small towns.

ACL version - "Each day offers a new slice of excitement with a procession of historic ports that bring to life the spirit of a nostalgic past. Gain deep insights into the roots of blues and rock from our knowledgeable onboard experts and local guides, who reveal the untold stories of musical giants who crafted the soundtrack of America."

Our version - The days were tedious and the knowledgeable onboard experts spoke on topics such as prior boat disasters and the history of the river, not the promised speakers with expertise in the music of the region, a theme which had attracted us to this particular cruise.

Below is the website's description of the American Splendor Paddlewheeler. Our notes, detailing the reality of what was delivered, are interspersed:

ACL version - "American Splendor allows guests to experience the nostalgia of classic paddlewheeler travel, while enjoying perfect comfort and the most modern amenities."

Our version - The trip started with the American Splendor having broken down in Vicksburg. Clearly there were some maintenance/mechanical issues neglected which resulted in the boat failing mid-journey. This breakdown led to two full extra days on the river - four days in total - where we were essentially trapped onboard. The en-suite bathrooms smelled like porta-potties. We learned from other passengers after the trip had ended that they were advised to leave the fan on in the bathroom 24/7 to prevent the mold that would otherwise grow and stave off the unpleasant odor.

ACL version - "The world's newest paddlewheeler, American Splendor features serene color palettes, luxurious textiles and linens, comfortable furniture throughout, and sophisticated artwork and flourishes."

Our version - The "staterooms" were furnished modestly and were small. In the common rooms, the furnishings were tired, dated and of tacky, not sophisticated, taste.

We have written ACL numerous times requesting a refund and they have not even bothered to reply. My mother has said she never wants to travel again, given how miserable of an experience we had. When we arrived home, she burst into tears of relief to have the trip behind her.

We encourage all those seeking a positive trip to avoid American Cruise Lines.

WOW! One of my Bucket List items after retiring in 7/2024 was going on a Columbia & Snake River cruise. We receive American Cruise Line sales brochures every few weeks. The brochures lead you to believe they are a luxury cruise line with exceptional organization, staff, shore excursions, and accommodations. I was excited and ready to book the May 11th Columbia & Snake River cruise. My gut feeling was to do some independent due diligence on American Cruise Lines River Cruises. Thank God I did! Usually don't rely on reviews but you can't deny the consistency and amount of their one star reviews. Starting my research over to hopefully find a more fitting River Cruise.

Our experience on this cruiseline was so negative that I wrote to the Vice President of Sales before preparing this review. With no reply after almost a month, I can only conclude that American Cruise Lines recognizes the shoddy provider it has become and doesn't care.

Lowlights of the trip included: Our room reeked of urine and other odors and the mattress was stained. (See photo). It was apparently adjacent to the employee dining room since we heard parties and other activities, and the hallway outside our room seemed to be a gathering point during shift change, which made it hard to sleep in. On arrival in Portland, cruise personnel stacked all the passengers' luggage outside, uncovered in the pouring rain, which can't be an isolated occurrence for Portland. All our clothing was wet and needed to be washed or dry cleaned after we got home. Both the arrival and departure processes were disorganized.

While the itinerary was well designed, the implementation as disorganized as a school class trip, not consistent with the price for the cruise.

Absolute worst experience and food ever.
Food was that of a poor nursing home and tasteless. Soiled carpet, fire alarm chirped for 2 days, I had to remove at take out battery, no one ever came to put battery in.
Black mold in the shower. Menu listed ice creams but ran out of most items. Dinners were mush and usually cold.
Landing sites to get off the boat were gravel, like a gravel pit, and muddy. Horrific experience.

Worst and most expensive cruise of a dozen that I have been on.
Don't waist your money or time.
We took the American Heritage from New Orleans to Memphis.
The ship broke down so we missed our stop at Natchez and half the stop at Vicksburg. Then they docked so far South of Memphis that the 1 hour bus ride each way caused us to miss half of our scheduled stops.
Management was unresponsive and /or rude when questioned about multiple unsatisfactory incidents.

These people are crooks. I was unable to reach my Maine Coast Cruise on Aug 19 2024 because of weather caused by Hurricane Ernesto. No flights in or out of Newark-----was in airport for 24+ hours because no hotel rooms. PLaced on standby for first flight to Portland on Friday (missing 5 days of our cruise already) Customer Service of American Cruise Lines suggested I just meet them at the next port---no airport, would have to drive there---highway department begged me not to drive in flooded Maine with bridges and roads out. Car would have had to sit there until I came back after it + I had no clothes---had no idea where our suitcases were.
American Cruise Lines told me that they couldn't control the weather and offered me 25% on another cruise! ha! I had to pay my own flight home and am out close to $20,000. It was my 50th Wedding Anniversary Cruise Celebration---gee thanks! Please folks to NOT use American Cruise Lines----they are crooks!! I will tell everyone I know NOT to ever use them!

My husband and I were suppose to sail on the American Cruise Lines ***** Coast Cruise leaving on Aug 19, 2024. Shortly after arriving a whole day ahead at ****** Airport, bad weather from Hurricane Ernesto settled in---no flights in or OUT for 24+ hours. We could not leave the airport because there was no place to go---all hotels full. Repeadly put our names on waiting list/standby for flights to *********--first flight out was Friday, thus missing already 4 days of the cruise. When I called Customer Service they suggested I just meet them at the next port, thus driving there. Called ***** Highway Dept. and they told me to PLEASE not do that ---they were flooding with bridges and roads out. Vehicle would have had to sit there until I came back to get it ---no dropoff @ $450 a day. It was a HURRICANE!! American Cruise Lines told me, not our fault, we can't control the weather! NO $ back---they offered me 25% off on another cruise!!!!! (I had to pay the flight back to Texas $3,800) This company needs to be stopped!!! Totally ripping people off!!! Read ALL the other examples below with similar stories. BBB PLEASE do something! Crooks---they are crooks!

American Cruise Line- Misrepresentation of the total price. Horrible customer service. We made reservations on April 17, 2024, for a cruise on August 23, 2024, and gave a $1000 deposit. Invoiced price was the 2025 price which was a substantial increase and not the price quoted. No one from customer service bothered to return calls or answer emailed inquiries about the price change so we cancelled six days later on April 23, 2024. The cruise line refused to return the entire $1000 deposit siting a ridiculous and unfair cancellation policy, return $500, keep $500 for "administrative fees", We don't plan on ever taking a cruise with this company! To this day, they have not returned any money. I am writing this review to warn other unsuspecting people. Don't do it!

I cruised on the American ***** from August 27th to Sept 4th. It was an organizational mess. The cruise director and her staff had very poor communication skills, When there were issues (which were plenty) they failed to communicate anything to us. We actually found ourselves on the wrong ACL bus which we had to be kicked off of. The food was good when they had what was printed on the menu. Half the time is was something different I had the driest piece of fish I've ever had in my life. The servers referred to the meals as a treasure hunt because they never knew what was available The servers were great and always cordial. My next complaint is that the rooms were not cleaned. When I first got into my cabin the counter for the coffee maker was a sticky mess. The bathroom smelled like urine or sewage the whole time and I complained about this a couple of times. No one offered to change my cabin. It was to be honest, quite gross!! It looked like the toilet had overflowed and got under the tiles and continued to smell. I finally had to ask my cabin attendant to clean the toilet after leaving it for 3 days. Last but not least they couldn't provide us with buses that worked so we missed a good many tours. Don't waste your money on ACL. It's a rip off!

Tennessee River Cruise, July 2024
Let the buyer beware regarding these cruises. River cruises, at least stateside, are geared toward an older crowd with many guests taking their annual vacation from their Independent/ Assisted living centers. Consequently, activities and excursions are tailored to their capabilities. Those with expectations of a high-energy cruise may be disappointed.
Nonetheless, one of the advantages in servicing an older crowd is that they are often less informed, and much less confrontational. This is where the grifting begins. Never have we seen such an example of people being taken advantage of on so many levels. The focus of ACL's market strategy must target this demographic as they are easier to control.
Our expectations were completely grounded. We anticipated a nice cruise with some interesting and historical excursions, and to dock in Nashville, TN on the final leg and attend the "grand Ole' Opry" on the last night. As it stands, changes were made to the itinerary, along with what appears to be deceptive practices and continual misinformation/ disinformation. Consequently, trust was violated, commitments were altered, and we were concerned about losing the money we paid if we did not travel.
The cruise itinerary was not followed. Communications disseminated prior to the cruise were fact checked and found to be blatant lies.
ACL's itinerary change included a transition for a bus ride from Chattanooga, TN, to Florence, AL. This was a 3.5-hour bus ride to include a 30-minute stop in Huntsville, AL at Walmart. This was the convenience stop for 4 -passenger buses and approximately 125 people.
As per numerous reviews, the stops at Walmart were part of the itinerary as far back as January, this practice seems to be a consistent method of business with ACL.
This was not in alignment with an enriched travel experience.
Management and staff had numerous personnel issues throughout the cruise and the tension in the air was tight. Meals were ok at the start, but overworked staff and personnel issues contributed to a deterioration of quality and service.
At every missed opportunity to make things right, management would announce they are sorry about the mix up but we could get 30% off their our next cruise. How about focusing on the cruise we are on and making it the "enriched travel experience" that ACL speaks of on their website?

American Cruise Line - American Independence is a dirty run down ship, It is deplorable and should be decommissioned. Please do not waist your money, we got ripped off $40,956.00 for this trip. Mother and four daughter trip and mother is 83. We requested adjoining rooms and was told on three separate occasions rooms 307 and 309 were adjoining.

Worst experience and waste of money---Took a cruise down the Columbia and Snake rivers and saw beautiful scenery.
Our experience-- Before one of the presentations to the group on board had begun, I was whispering to the person next to me and the staff member who was to give the presentation made a comment into the microphone that "we have some talkers in the front row". ARE you kidding me? I am paying for this trip and I was not interrupting because her presentation had not started.

At breakfast I requested some pastries and was told that I could find pastries on the 5th deck but not in the dining room. No one offered to get them for us.

They do not tell you about the steep ramps at all ports. Very disappointing to those with limited mobility. There should be a disclosure.

******** Cruise Line's "Cancel For Any Reason Protection Plan, with Deluxe Protection" is not necessarily true. *** and I purchased their Maine Coast Cruise ($11,990.00) on July 1, 2024, paid ******** $600.00 for the ********* *** the night before the cruise, and paid $1,140.00 for the "Cancel For Any Reason Protection Plan". Our flight from ***** was scheduled to arrive at 3:10 PM, June 30th. The last flight to ********* ** was cancelled stranding us in ******* for the night. I called ******** at 5:21 PM and advised the representative our flight would arrive at the Portland airport at 12:30 PM on July 1st, the day of the cruise. She stated that they boarded for 11:30 too 12:30 and leave at 2:00 PM, with or without us. I also called the ********* *** and canceled our reservation. July 1, we went to the ******* airport to board our flight to ********* *** fell in the airport, requiring us to go to a hospital emergency room. At 8:58 AM, I called ******** and advised them we would not make the cruise and requested the 80% cruise credit, as per their "Protection Plan". The rep told me that we did not get the credit because we did not cancel prior to the start of the "Cruise Package" which started the day before the actual cruise upon arrival at the Residence Inn. On July 3, I emailed customer service and on July 17th, I received a return email saying that we would not get the cruise credit of 80%. Instead they offered me a "courtesy discount" of 30% of cruise fare, if we booked by August 31, 2024 To date, we are out $13,730.00. If we accept their offer, we will still be out $9,611.00 for another cruise for which we have concerns about sending payment. Our advice to other customers of ******** Cruise Lines is to realize that even though you purchase the "Protection Plan", be prepared to lose all or some of your cruise fare due to their interpretation of their "Cancel For Any Reason Protection Plan with Deluxe Protection". We will not ever cruise on ******** Cruise Lines

American cruise lines advertises small ship cruising done perfectly that is far from the truth. We stayed in an owner suite at $1700 a day on arrival we noticed we had no towels, no hand towels no washcloth nothing we wanted the shower after traveling. We asked repeatedly to get towels that did not happen on our first day of the second day we had to wait till the office opened and call them and got towels just in time to get to breakfast 10 minutes before they closed it did not start our trip on a good note. We contacted American cruise lines and asked if they could do something. They offered us 25% off our next cruise which we weren't sure we were gonna go back on again if after what happened, we asked for something to be taken off this cruise and they refused, we reached out to the Robertson Brothers American Cruise lines owners, but they did not respond. We sent emails back-and-forth for six months but nothing ever came about it. Just Marcus Bosco offers 25% on the next cruise. We sailed on the American jazz on the upper Mississippi they use the ship as a training ship which explains the lack of service I don't care what motel you would stay at in the US and they did not give you towels for close to a day and a half that would not compensate you keep in mind please we paid $1700 a day we will never sell on any of their ships again and do not recommend that you do find a cruise line with better reviews if you like high school cafeteria food and this cruise line may be for you

We cruised from June 25-July 2, 2024. The ship was not full so they upgraded us to room 221. The toilet leaked all 7 days on the ship. Wet tile and sopping carpet. I asked to move to another room but they said they could fix the leak, it happens a couple times a week. They set up a noisy fan with very little walkway around it. The closed caption on the tv did not work and with our hearing loss that was useless. And no one cared about fixing the problems. I emailed a letter to American Cruise Lines Customer Service requesting compensation for inconvenience with pictures of wet floors on July 11 and 3 weeks later have not had a response. We didn't pack enough socks to walk on wet floors. We were very disappointed with the cruise and lack of concern about the problems during and after the cruise.

My wife and I were booked on the Maine Coast and Harbors cruise out of Portland on 7/22/2024 and we were scheduled to arrive in Portland the day before on 7/21/2024 so we had plenty of time to board on the 22nd. Late Saturday, 07/20/2024, we received a flight cancelation notice from Delta due to a worldwide software issue. When we inquired about our options Delta said they would rebook us on a flight that would arrive after the cruise ship left the port. We contacted American Cruise Lines and we were told they would not give us a refund or give us credit for booking a later cruise. They were very rude and were not interested in helping us. Rather than lose $12,000.00 we booked flights to join the ship in Bar Harbour losing two days of cruising. We were assured our room would be held for us and they would notify crew we were coming. Long story short, the crew were never notified and our room had been given to another couple. We will never cruise with them again.

All I can say is don't spend your money on American Cruise Lines. We had the owners suite and every night there was someone on the roof stomping around and moving the padio ,furniture around at 3:30am.This is every night on the cruise. We complained many times but never it stopped. It took 3 days for them to fix a padio divider fllap to quit banging all night by our bedroom and the list goes on.
